Volunteering with Quetzaltrekkers

My three months of volunteering with Quetzaltrekkers from Oct 2014 till Jan 2015 – one of my amazingst adventure time of my life – just finished – so that I can make my summing up.
Everything started in June 2014 when Katharina a colleague of a friend told me about this volunteer organization in León, Nicaragua – Quetzaltrekkers (shortly QT) http://leon.quetzaltrekkers.org/ – hiking volcanos, helping kids. Everything she told me was exactly that I was looking for without knowing it.
To live for a while in a town of a Central American country close to the sea, loads of sun, meeting international people, lots of sport, to spend as much time as possible in nature. So I knew that´s gonna be my spot for the next 3 months. And she didn´t promised to much. My expectations were more than exceeded. It was one of my best times of my life. When you experience this you do not watch any television anymore, this was better than any movie what you can imagine.
Since I arrived directly from Germany it took some time to get used to my new environment – English and Spanish speaking team on work, 35 degrees from 8am till midnight (having a fan is super recommendable to survive), different currency, different food, hiking 4 to 5 times a week, lots of rum, lots of fun, lack of sleeping, and not to forget stories over stories from super interesting, outgoing people all over the world.
After the first intense month of training there it came up a moment of 2 days having off. Heading to Matagalpa, sitting 3 hours in a chicken bus btw another travel experience you should not miss in Nicaragua – I got some reflections moments.
Allthough there is not too much time in between to take a deep breathe during working there, it is such a unique opportunity to work as a guide in Central America, beeing in charge of guiding tourists through protected areas and national parks. At the same time all the money which we were earning due operating hikes was going directly to social projects mostly in the suburbs of León. Helping in projects involve some kindergarten, donations for building roofs and toilets for a school in Somoto, building and painting tables for a library, playing and teaching kids etc.
If you go hiking with QT there are some highlights expecting you:
Volcano Boarding on the authentic volcano Cerro Negro
Seeing, smelling and hearing lava on the volcano Telica
El Hoyo Hike – 3 volcanos in 2 days – Volcano Boarding on Cerro Negro, Camping next to the crater on el Hoyo, swimming in the lagoon Asososca
And last but not least my personal highlight: Canyoning and Rapelling/Abseiling in Somoto
All this can just be realized, if you have an awesome team that support eachother specially in busy times though. I want to say thank you to all my colleagues I always could count on – this team spirit was kind of unique. Not to forget to mention our crazy, loveable dog “Caña” (see picture above) we had great moments of joy and laugh with.
After all I can just say, it was a great time I don´t ever want to miss. Let´s now start with my life “being a nomade” for the next three months. I am looking forward what else gonna be the next small and big adventures of this journey of “vivir mi vida”.
Own lime tree in our garden – what a mojito paradise
…it is just so amazing to have your own lime tree in your garden. Just imagine we will have every day a refreshing mojito. Fresher it is not possible! 🙂 Welcome to the Mojito paradise.
An absolute must – Volcano Boarding en Cerro Negro
If you go travelling to Nicaragua one of the musts is Volcano Boarding en Cerro Negro. It is one of the youngest volcanos in Central America and for me it is how really a volcano should ideally look like. Authentically black, it is out of ash and gravel and you can smell sulfur if you come closer to the crater.
Well, after climbing up the 728 m “black hill” the big adventure of Volcano Boarding is expecting you. The popularity of this sport has been increasing since 2005 an Australian was discovering it. There is also a accurate saying about Volcano Boarding: Volcano Boarding is like having sex the first time – you don´t know what you do and after some seconds it´s done. 🙂
Recently a client and blogger was just recording his breathtaking ride with a Gopro. Slightly you can get an impression here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ms9yMzIHA-M&feature=youtu.be.
It is definitely an upcoming trend that even the Spanish Television will report about it. In my first day of working as a guide they showed up in the entrance and made an interview with me and some other clients of us about the popularity of volcano boarding. Not only the Spanish Television talks about, also New York Times has already been on the active volcano: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/19/travel/19headsup.html?_r=0 It is probably a travel worth it not only because it is on everyone´s lips.
Shortest visit at a haircutter in my life
After some months any girl looks forward to a proper, fresh haircut. At a free morning
I decided to make it happen and to give me a nice treat.
Starting my city walk to visit the local market where you get delicious food like rice, beans, also innards of pigs (hmmm, yammy! ;-)), I entered to a random haircutter to ask for a haircut. There weren´t any customers at all, so we could immediately start with the cut.
Ahead of schedule – after 10 minutes it was done – to shave my sidecut and to get my ends trimmed. Checking my vis-a-vis in the mirror contentedly I payed less than $5 and entered the street.
Well, just wondering by myself how many hours some girls can spend in a hairdresser…:) I smirkingly continued my day with exploring my new hometown León.
Still rainy season
Well, we are still in the end of the rainy season here in Nicaragua. It is supposed to end slightly in October/November… Since I have come here it was raining every day like cats and Dogs for hours…Streets were totally washed out, cars were stucked in the middle of nowhere, to pass some “streets” it is like a really bumpy ride… Well, yesterday luckily it was the first day without rain, so I thought slowly we are coming to an end. Right now I am having office shift and rain just was coming back again. Attached you see my view out of my Office towards the street in León. See more here regarding rainy season www.lonelyplanet.com/nicaragua/weather
First impressions of arrival in Leon in Nicaragua
It´s just feeling like I have already been here since a month as I already experienced quiet a lot in a really short time. Assisting in Volcano Boarding, Assisting in the tour to the vulcan Telica, exploring places of the City León where I stay, already I have my regular “chicken Lady” to have a economic lunch or dinner…so the things are going well so far…
